Why a Purple Cow?  Here's the story of where they came from, and what we collect!

Gelett Burgess
Frank Gellet Burgess, usually called Gellet, was born in Boston in 1866. Educated as an engineer, Burgess became a humorist, illustrator, writer, and poet. Burgess is famous today for his 1895 poem, “Purple Cow: Reflections on a Mythic Beast Who’s Quite Remarkable, at Least” which goes as follows:

I never saw a purple cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you anyhow
I’d rather see than be one!

This poem was followed by a lesser known masterpiece, “Confession: and a Portrait Too Upon a Background that I Rue.” This poem states:

Ah yes, I wrote “The Purple Cow”
I’m sorry now I wrote it;
But I can tell you anyhow,
I’ll kill you if you quote it!

Burgess went on to write children’s books and interviewed Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Georges Braque to write an article that would bring cubist art to the attention of art lovers in the United States.

   My owner, Karen, wanted me to say a few words about her and our antique shop in Buckley, Wa.  I'm Tucker by the way, an English Springer Spaniel, and best friend. I hangout a lot at Karen's store, Purple Cow Antiques, at 116 Cedar St. in Buckley, Wa.  We are really close to Mt.Rainier National Park, so I get to visit with lots of people stopping by on their vacations

   Sometimes I get to go with Karen to an antique show someplace in the Pacific Northwest.  We have fun and meet nice people who love antiques too.  Our fall shows are the Palmer Wirf Expo in Portland Oregon on October 24th and 25th.  We will also be at the Puyallup, Wa. show at the Western Wa. Fairgounds on November 7th and 8th.

   Lately we have been spending a lot of time on the computer, listing stuff on a place called Shopriety Stores.  We also have our own online store at Antiques at the Purple Cow .  Of course, I mostly stay under the desk and sleep.  There is more about our store and online sales on our blog, about Purple Cow Antiques .  I'm working on having my own blog, but right now biscuits are a bigger priority.  Well, see ya again sometime.  Don't forget to stop by if you ever get to the Northwest.  Tucker  June, 2009

Tucker 4/26/2001 ~ 1/19/2011

Sadly we lost our wonderful Tucker at the age of 10.  He was a wonderful friend and people who visited the shop could always count on a friendly greeting from him.  We miss him everyday.
